Countries at the Crossroads 2006
Sanja Tatic, Christopher Walker, Editors
Each year Freedom House publishes essays on the state of political development in thirty strategically important countries. At 800 text pages, the book requires an easy-to-read, traditional approach to the type and tables.

Values-Driven Business
Ben Cohen, Mal Warwick
The first book in Berrett-Koehler's Social Venture Network Series established a template for many subsequent—and different—books in the series. The design accommodates each book's individuality and maintains a visual consistency for the series.

Ten Thousand Horses
John Stahl-Wert, Ken Jennings
The authors asked that horse images and a western motif be incorporated into their business fable. I thought it would be fun for the reader to have a running-horse flip-book style and luckily this concept enhanced the ideas presented in the text. The image on the chapter opening spread is taken from Cassandra Chu's cover design.

301 Ways to Make RV Travel Safer, Easier, and More Fun
Bernice Beard
The author wrote about her passion for RV travel and experiences on the road with her husband. She wanted each chapter in the book to have a "tip" section with boxes that could be checked off by the reader as well as a "journal" section. These sample pages show how these two directives are combined into an easy flow for the reader. The New York Times thought the author did a fine job!

Heavy Hitter Selling
Steven W. Martin
This fascinating book about the psychology of selling provides a lot of visual information in support of the author's text. It was important that the visual elements complemented the text without overwhelming the reader's eye.

Legally Speaking
David J. Dempsey, J.D.
For this book, essentially a manual of excellent courtroom technique, the author wanted to present the information in an elegant and authoritative manner. Incorporating the numerous pull-quotes into the text (as well as letting them stand on their own) was the challenge. Also shown is a sample of the bibliography.

Beating the System
Russell L. Ackoff, Sheldon Rovin
This is an empowering book for those of us who often feel cowed by the "powers that be." The authors wanted their design to be casually inviting as well as highly informative—a fun read without intimidation!

Rashi's Daughters: Joheved
Maggie Anton
This book's design needed to conform with the historical fiction genre design style that the author's audience expects while also conveying a visual hint of the novel's medieval setting. The simplicity of the matter—and the chapter opening pages—reflects those requirements and also shows how a lot of type can be presented on a page without becoming daunting to the reader.

Formula 2+2
Douglas B. Allen, Dwight W. Allen
One in a series of fable-type books on management published by Berrett-Koehler, this book needed to incorporate the 2+2 concept that the Allens use in their approach to performance appraisals. I used their logo on the chapter opening page and based the display head (the "+++") and the pull-quote style on it as well as matching the type and layout to other books in the series.

Go Team!
Ken Blanchard, Alan Randolph, Peter Grazier
A lot of information competes for the reader's attention in this short chapter. Each element—part and chapter titles, text, pull-quote, epigraph, boxed texts with their respective icons—has to stand up and be noticed.
